The Western Pennsylvania Writing Project in the School of Education and Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English will host an evening writing retreat on May 21 with Patricia Park.
The retreat — from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Center for Urban Education, 4303 Posvar Hall — will be a master class on Park’s young adult novel focusing on craft, analysis and creative writing exercises.
Park is the author of “Re Jane” and “Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim,” known for her sharp attention to voice, identity and the complexities of belonging. Her work offers an entry point into thinking about YA literature not only as a genre, but as a space for critical storytelling, cultural reflection, and creative possibility.
During this master class, participants can expect:

Insight into the craft of YA fiction, including voice, character, and narrative structure

Guided analysis of key elements of contemporary YA literature

Generative writing exercises designed to support your own creative and instructional practice

Time and space to write, reflect, and connect with fellow educators and writers
