Fern Hollow Bridge to close next week through July 7

We all know that Pittsburgh is a city of bridges, and it’s hard to get anywhere without crossing one.

In the coming weeks, the routes in an out of Oakland will become even more complicated.

  • The Fern Hollow Bridge between Squirrel Hill and Regent Square will be closed from June 12 to July 7 so crews can finish work on the rebuilt bridge, which collapsed in January 2022. The span reopened in December, but with one lane closed. Once the final bridge work is finished in July, all four lanes will be open to traffic and the trail that runs beneath it will be reopened to the public, according to the Post-Gazette.

  • The ramp from Forbes Avenue to the Birmingham Bridge is closed through June 21 to allow crews to conduct steel repairs and bridge painting operations. All ramp traffic will be detoured.

  • The Charles Anderson Bridge on the Boulevard of the Allies, connecting Oakland and Squirrel Hill remains closed since an inspection in February found it needed immediate repairs before it could safely carry vehicles again. A public meeting in May outlined possible designs for a redone bridge. The final design phase is planned for this summer. Construction is expected to start in spring 2024. Find details from the public meeting on the City of Pittsburgh website.
