Annual report on mean and median faculty, staff salaries released

The Senate Budget Policies committee received the faculty and staff Mean & Median Salary Reports (available through link with a Pitt sign on) in May.

The report groups salaries by responsibility centers and job type, from data gathered in October 2022. For faculty, the numbers reflect nine-month equivalent salaries. For the School of Medicine, faculty salaries reflect only the amount they get from Pitt. Staff are listed with 12-month salaries.

Some categories are left blank if there are three or fewer people in that area, so as not to reveal individual salaries. Deans are included in executive, administrative and managerial staff under the Office of the Provost. Employees are associated with the responsibility center that processes their employee record. For instance, Mellon and distinguished professors within the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences show up in the Dietrich School dean's office responsibility center, rather than with their department.

Post-docs and research associates

Several departments had only one or two people in this category, so their salaries were not included to protect their privacy.

Other than the Learning Research and Development Center — with 34 employees at a mean salary of $79,099 and median of $67,575 — all of the other salaries were grouped closely together between $49,000 and $57,000.

Salaries for continuing faculty

The committee also received an analysis of salary increases for full-time continuing faculty from fiscal year 2022 to fiscal year 2023. This group makes up 83 percent of all faculty in 2023. The Salary Increase Reports also are available online with a Pitt sign-on.

For fiscal year 2023, the salary pool for all eligible employees was set at 3.25 percent with an 1 percent available for merit, market or equity salary increases.

Overall the average individual faculty members’ increase was 5.5 percent. The median was 4.3 percent. The highest average increase was in the Swanson School of Engineering, at 6.9 percent, and the lowest was 4.3 percent at Pitt–Titusville.

The total amount paid to these faculty who remained on staff from FY22 to FY23 increased from $225 million to $237 million.
