Pitt will be offering a series of flu shot clinics this fall. All faculty and staff, as well as their dependents, are encouraged to get a flu shot to help you stay healthy throughout the winter months.

Those with UPMC Health Plan coverage can receive a flu shot at no cost and earn Health Incentive Reward Dollars. Employees who are not UPMC Health Plan members would have to pay the $45 out-of-pocket cost and seek reimbursement from their insurance.

UPMC Health Plan members who would prefer to obtain their flu shot off-campus, may do so from a participating provider at no out-of-pocket cost. Present your UPMC Health Plan member ID card at the time you receive your flu shot and you will not have to submit a receipt or any other additional paperwork to UPMC Health Plan.

Oakland clinics

For the clinics at William Pitt Union and Petersen Events Center, appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. These three events are run by Pitt’s Vaccination and Health Connection Hub, which will be closed during these flu shot clinics.

In addition to these clinics, Falk Pharmacy is offering walk-in flu vaccines from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

Flu vaccines also are available at Pitt’s Vaccination and Health Connection Hub, 4041 Fifth Avenue (at the base of Nordenberg Hall).  Appointments are encouraged; however, walk-ins are welcome based on availability.

Regional campuses

Flu vaccine clinics will also be held at Pitt’s regional campuses.

COVID vaccines

The new 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccines are now available at Pitt’s Vaccination and Health Connection Hub.

“The recent summer surge of COVID-19 has created concern about how best to prepare for the upcoming fall and winter seasons,” said Joe Suyama, the Hub’s medical director and professor of emergency medicine and vice chair for career development, School of Medicine.

“This year’s COVID-19 vaccine has been updated to better match the current circulating COVID-19 variants. So, getting your COVID-19 update along with your flu shot will be the best way to decrease the chances you will have severe illness or end up in the hospital from either condition, especially if you are at high risk for a bad outcome."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting the new vaccine is important even if you have been vaccinated previously because protection from the COVID-19 vaccine decreases with time.

 “In 2023, more than 916,300 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 and more than 75,500 people died from COVID-19,” the CDC said this summer, in a statement announcing the new vaccines.

The Hub will have both Moderna shots for patients 3 and older and Pfizer shots for patients 5 and older. After Dec. 1, the Hub only be able to vaccinate patients 5 and older. Please note, all COVID-19 vaccines are subject to supply chain availability.
