Pitt’s Race and Social Determinants of Equity, Health and Well-being Initiative will host its third annual conference on Sept. 27 as part of a multiday event focused on the Pitt Global Experience — Africa and the African Diaspora.
The four-day event, from Sept. 25 to 28, will elevate and celebrate Pitt scholars and some of the University’s resources that focus on Africa and people of African descent around the world. It is sponsored by Office of Faculty Diversity and Development in the Office of the Provost, the University Center for International Studies’ Center for African Studies and Center for Latin American Studies, and the Dietrich School’s Department of Africana Studies.
The registration deadline is Sept. 20 for the Race & … conference, which is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27. It will include:
Global marketplace: 9-10 a.m., William Pitt Union, Kurtzman Room
Global research showcase: 10 a.m.-noon, William Pitt Union, Assembly Room, followed by a luncheon featuring African-influenced cuisines. This event will include a welcoming drum and dance performance; a panel discussion on Think Global, Act Local, moderated by Martina Anto-Ocrah; and a curated review of Pitt’s global engagement on the African continent and the African diaspora.
After lunch, the conference will move to the Latin American Cultural Center, 4338 Bigelow Blvd., where the exhibits “Haiti: Culture, Religion, and Revolution” and “Latin America and the Caribbean” will be open to all conference attendees beginning at 1 p.m.
Global Research Panel Discussion: 2-5 p.m., Latin American Cultural Center. This will be a series of facilitated short panel dialogues showcasing the breadth and depth of faculty scholarship.
