Volunteers will be competing in the Garbage Olympics to clean up the most trash across the city of Pittsburgh. 

Pitt has joined the challenge and registered four neighborhood teams — North Oakland, South Oakland, Central Oakland and West Oakland — that will scour the streets for trash from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 19.

Awards are given out in categories such as most garbage collected, bulk items found, and the strangest item. Supplies, such as gloves, bags, safety vests and litter grabbers are coordinated through local organizers and Pittsburgh Public Works. 

Anyone can participate. Pitt students, staff and faculty who wish to sign up for an Oakland neighborhood team should visit their preferred neighborhood Volunteer Portal links (Pitt Password needed).

Check in will begin at 9:30 a.m., Sept. 19, at the following locations:

North Oakland: Outside of Clapp Hall

Central Oakland: Zulema Park (Zulema Street)

West Oakland: Outside of Trees Hall

South Oakland: Dan Marino Field (Frazier Street)

Pitt’s participation is part of the University’s annual Civic Action Week, which also includes a Volunteer Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Gallagher Plaza outside William Pitt Union, and a National Voter Registration Day with PittVotes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 on the Bigelow lawns.
