A new documentary looks at the life of Frances Hesselbein, who attended the University of Pittsburgh Junior College at Johnstown before her nearly 70-year career in public service, including 13 years as CEO of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America.
Hesselbein inspired the creation of the Pitt’s Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement in 2009, now the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum. In 2015, the University Library System became home to the Frances Hesselbein archives.
The Hesselbein Leadership Forum and University Library System, along with the team behind documentary, will host a screening of “Defining Moments: The Life and Leadership of Quiet Revolutionary Frances Hesselbein” at 5 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Archives & Special Collections Instruction Room, 340 Hillman Library. Hesselbein, who died in 2022 at age 107, went on to lead the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, which was renamed the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute in 2012. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 for her work turning around the Girl Scouts organization in the 1980s. She also advised military leaders and students at West Point.
Among other accolades, Hesselbein held an honorary doctoral degree from Pitt’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, and was a distinguished alumna and a Pitt Legacy Laureate.
