Diabetes prevention program available to those covered by UPMC

Are you concerned that you are at risk for diabetes or have been told by your doctor that you have pre-diabetes? Have you gained weight, been physically inactive, or struggled to find a healthy routine?

You’re not alone. One in three U.S. adults has pre-diabetes. Fortunately, lifestyle modifications can be extremely beneficial!

To help get you back on track, the University’s Comprehensive Medication Management benefit is offering Group Lifestyle Balance, a diabetes prevention program created by researchers at Pitt.

All full- and part-time regular University employees with a University-sponsored UPMC Health Plan (Panther Gold, PPO, or Basic) who are concerned that they have pre-diabetes or have been told by their doctor that they have pre-diabetes may be eligible to participate.

The Group Lifestyle Balance program aims to help individuals lose weight, become more physically active and reduce stress. All classes in the year-long program will be delivered remotely.

In addition to learning healthy living skills, participants will receive:

  • A complimentary scale

  • Other health and fitness related items depending on number of sessions attended

  • Up to $100 in Wellness for Life Health Incentive Awards depending on the number of sessions attended

  • Ongoing guidance from a pharmacist trained in lifestyle coaching

There is no cost to take part in the program. If you are interested in participating or learning more, email Natalie Capozzolo, pharmacist, at mymeds@pitt.edu no later than Aug. 22, 2025.

Those interested will be invited to participate in information sessions on a rolling basis. The program begins Sept. 22.
