Another Oakland institution has closed.

Dave & Andy’s Homemade Ice Cream shut its doors on April 28 after 40 years on Atwood Street. The business was started in 1983 by Andy Hardie and Dave Tuttle. Tuttle sold his stake to Hardie in 1990. Now, Hardie has decided to retire.

A post on different social media sites on April 21 said: “We would like to thank our friends, families, past and present employees and most of all our loyal, loving customers. You are what made 40 years possible. We will cherish all the wonderful memories and friendships that have been made over the years.”

Dave & Andy’s was featured by Rick Sebak as one of his favorite frozen treats and in the Pa. Milkshake Bucket List on PA Eats, and it won several “Best of” awards from The Pitt News. The store featured a rotating list of more than 200 custom-made ice cream flavors, along with homemade waffle cones.

It joins a list of other long-standing food establishments that have closed in the past few years. The Original Hot Dog Shop closed in 2020 after 60 years in business. The original Atwood Street location of Mad Mex opened in 1993 and closed in February 2023; Fuel and Fuddle gastropub, which opened in 1993, closed in May 2023; and Spice Island Tea House, which opened in 1995, closed in October 2023.
