Pitt men's basketball coach Jeff Capel signed a deal earlier this month extending his contract for three years, through at least the 2029-30 season.

No financial terms of the deal were released, but in the University’s latest financial disclosure, for fiscal year 2022-23, Capel’s salary was listed at $3.5 million — second only to football coach Pat Narduzzi, who earned nearly $6.5 million in base pay and bonuses.

"When Coach Capel initially arrived at Pitt in 2018, he was tasked with one of the most difficult rebuilding jobs in all of college basketball," said Heather Lyke, Pitt’s director of athletics. "Jeff fully embraced that challenge from the outset and never wavered from his lofty vision for our players and program. Brick-by-brick, he built a rock-solid foundation that has Pitt basketball poised for a championship future." 

Capel came to Pitt in 2018 as its 16th head basketball coach. He previously was head coach at the University Oklahoma and Virginia Commonwealth University, and an assistant coach at his alma mater, Duke.

Over the past two seasons, Capel has guided the Panthers to 46 wins, including 26 in ACC play. He has compiled a 97-92 record in six seasons at the helm of the program and was named the 2023 ACC Coach of the Year as well as a national coach of the year finalist.
