“Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth-Century Japan” by Hiroshi Nara, professor emeritus, East Asian Languages and Literatures, Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences (Lexington Books, 2024)
“Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth-Century Japan” is a critical assessment of the work of the American art theorist Ernest Fenollosa in Meiji Japan. His career began with the 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that cemented the reputation of his work. Fenollosa became the lightning rod in defining the course of Japanese painting as well as establishing the first art school. The book offers the first English translation of Fenollosa's 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech, which was previously unavailable to the non-Japanese reading audience.
