Woman dies after being hit by shuttle bus near Petersen Events Center

A woman was struck by a UPMC shuttle bus around 9:25 a.m. Nov. 29 at Terrace Street and Sutherland Drive near the Petersen Events Center, and later died of her injuries, according to Pittsburgh Police.

Bystanders administered CPR until responding firefighters took over. Pittsburgh EMS transported the patient to the hospital in critical condition.

The woman was later identified as Emily Watson, 29, of Pittsburgh. KDKA reported that she was a UPMC employee.

A spokesman for UPMC said, “This tragic event has had a profound impact on the UPMC and Pitt communities. With our partners at the University of Pittsburgh, we are reviewing public safety protocols throughout the Oakland campus to bolster safety measures.”

The vehicle-pedestrian accident occurred just a few blocks from where a Pitt student was killed in January 2020. Barbara Como, 20, of Chester Springs, Pa., was struck by a Port Authority bus as she crossed DeSoto Street at Fifth Avenue. The bus driver, Shavonne James, pleaded guilty in January 2021 to involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person.

BikePGH and Complete Streets at Pitt will hold a memorial for Watson at 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at the intersection of Terrace Street and Sutherland Drive, where the crash occurred. Everyone is invited to attend

During the gathering, the community and organizers from the student-led bike and pedestrian advocacy group, Complete Streets at Pitt, will remember and honor the life of Watson and all those killed in acts of traffic violence, especially members of the Oakland community.

“The recent crash and pedestrian fatality could have and should have been avoided. For this reason, we must do better to protect our communities, and we will continue to advocate for increased safety conditions for those on our streets. This tragedy must not be repeated again, and we believe the city of Pittsburgh must commit to a Vision Zero policy of zero traffic fatalities,” said Neil Cahill, communication chair of Complete Streets at Pitt.
