HR’s Gallaher will address compensation at next Spotlight Session

By MARTY LEVINE

“Mid-July or so” is when Pitt employees should get their first glimpse of the University’s new job catalog, with 1,300 unique job titles, descriptions and salary ranges grouped in new job families, Vice Chancellor for Human Resources James Gallaher told Staff Council’s April 19 meeting.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS

Coffee & Conversations with Provost Ann Cudd: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 2, Alumni Hall 7th floor Auditorium. This is the first in a series of informal events to get to know University leadership. Register and submit questions about Cudd or the provost’s office. This event will be recorded for those who can’t make it in person.

Spring Assembly: 10 to 11 a.m. May 10 in the O’Hara Ballroom and via Zoom. Staff Council will host its annual spring assembly, titled “Stressed? Don't despair — increase resilience to stress with self care.” See related story.

Pitt Day at Kennywood: June 17. “The link should be forthcoming soon to purchase discounted tickets for food games, music and fun at the Pavilion,” Rodzwicz said

Staff Council general meeting: Noon May 17 on Zoom only. The Elections Committee will be hosting a Q&A session with Staff Council candidates for president.

Department heads will be examining the catalog for the next 90 days to do final edits, after a large effort over the past year whittled down the previous 7,000-plus job titles here.

Gallaher emphasized that no current employee’s title, duties or salary will change because of the new catalog, which is part of the years-long compensation modernization effort. Nor will there be any salary decreases “even if folks are positioned well above market” in their current pay. “Our goal with this is to be more consistent … across the whole institution and our goal is to ensure there is equity among those job families.”

The next 90 days of catalog examination by department heads, he said, aims to “make sure folks are in the right jobs” in the catalog and that “job families are aligned across campus.”

“We’ve had to stretch things out,” Gallaher said of recent progress of what he continues to label a three- to five-year process. “We’re at that starting line. We’re not running too fast but we are running.”

Staff Council will host a Spotlight Session on the latest compensation modernization news, at noon May 16 online, with Gallaher and Shahfar Shaari, the project’s manager for HR. Register through the University Calendar.

The annual election process for Staff Council officers also was begun at its April meeting. Nominations are due May 1 for all the offices — president, executive vice president, vice president of finance, vice president of public relations and parliamentarian. Ballots will be announced May 11, and the officers will answer questions submitted by Staff Council members at their next meeting on May 17.

The online election will take place May 22 to June 9 among members. As instituted last year, the offices will be voted upon sequentially, since candidates may be nominated for more than one office. Once the election for president is decided, the winning candidate’s name will be eliminated from ballots for the remaining offices and balloting with begin for the next office (executive vice president), and so on down the list.
