Faculty union plans action before April 18 bargaining session

The Union of Pitt Faculty will hold another rally on April 18 before that day’s final bargaining session of the semester.

Melinda Ciccocioppo, chair of the union’s Communication and Action Team, said the action is being taken because, “The administration still has not responded to our compensation proposal. We are calling on them to pick up the pace of bargaining and specifically to address our proposal on compensation so that we can work together toward what we hope to be our shared goal of fair pay for faculty.”

The union has proposed cost of living increases of 8.3 percent per year (the current inflation rate); a salary floor of $60,000 for all faculty (pro-rated for part-time faculty); 10 percent promotion increases and more.

Union supporters will gather at 9:45 a.m. outside of the Schenley Drive entrance to Posvar Hall, where the negotiations take place.

On March 29, the union posted a chart with updates on the status of various bargaining items, ranging from tentative agreement on health and safety clauses to some progress on workload and performance evaluations to no progress on shared governance and administration rejection of promotion and tenure and layoff and recall proposals.

The University also has posted its proposals and updates on bargaining on the facultyunionization.pitt.edu website.
